My Silverlight Plugin Does Not Work in Mac

This article will guide to workaround the problem of Microsoft Silverlight not working in Mac Operating System.

Download SilverLight Crash Fix-it Wizard

Follow this procedure to download:

  • Click here to download (silverlight crash) repair tool.
  • Double click on the setup file and follow the on-screen
    instructions to install the product.
  • Run a Scan and fix the detected errors by clicking the
    "Fix Errors" button.

Disable Hardware Acceleration

Using Mozilla Firefox disable the Hardware Acceleration feature through Preferences dialog.



  • Open Mozilla Firefox.
  • Click the Firefox button.
  • Select Preferences.
  • Click Advanced | General | Browsing.
  • Check-up “Use hardware acceleration when available” checkbox.
  • Click Apply | OK.
  • Exit and re-open the web browser of the changes to take effects.

Check Plugin Status

Determine if Microsoft Silverlight plugin is enabled or not. If not, check-up its checkbox. First you’ll have to load any Microsoft Silverlight-enabled website.

  • Open the Safari web browser.
  • Open the following link which is MSDN Silverlight-enabled page:

    http://samples.msdn.microsoft.com/Silverlight/SampleBrowser/
  • Click the Safari menu.
  • Choose Preferences option.
  • Preferences dialog will open. Click the Security tab.
  • Tick mark the box named “Enable plug-ins”.

Check Energy Saver Settings

Ensure that your energy saver settings are properly configured. Your Silverlight plugin does not work in Mac because of incorrect energy saver settings.

  • Click System Preferences.
  • Click Energy Saver.
  • Select “High performance” option for the Battery Life feature.

Delete Corrupt Package Files

Package Files (.pkg) could be corrupt. These files are usually located in different directories. Following is the list of all package files that you should delete and then download Microsoft Silverlight again. Since these files are part of Microsoft Silverlight program, do not forget to install the program again.

  • Open the following folder:

    /Library
  • Delete the following files:

    ../Internet Plug-Ins/Silverlight.plugin
    ../Receipts/Silverlight.pkg
    ../Receipts/Silverlight_W2_MIX.pkg
    ../Internet Plug-Ins/WPFE.plugin
    ../Receipts/WPFE.pkg
  • Open the following folder:

    /Applications
  • Delete the following file:

    ../Microsoft Silverlight.app
  • Open the following folder:

    /Preferences
  • Delete the following file:

    ../com.microsoft.silverlight.plist
  • Open the following folder:

    /Private
  • Delete the following file:

    ../var/db/receipts/com.microsoft.installsilverlightplugin
  • Restart the Mac operating system.
  • Download Microsoft Silverlight plug-in from the Microsoft Download Center.

Allow Running Silverlight in Unsafe Mode

Safari users can run Microsoft Silverlight in the unsafe mode.

  • Refer all steps (Steps # 1-6) from “Check plugin status” paragraph.
  • Click “Manage website settings” button.
  • Select Microsoft Silverlight. Activate “Run in Unsafe Mode” feature.
  • Set Alert= Trust
  • Click Done button.
